I’ll be up in Rochester again this week and get the chance to meet Ralph Whitbeck, aka @redwolves, who is a jQuery Evangelist Team Member. He seems to be a fan of beer as well, so we are going to hit up Tap and Mallet at 6:30 on Wednesday (the 28th).

It turns out that Wednesdays are Beer Social nights there, beginning at 8pm, so I was a bit limited on what I could reserve. I got a table for 10 at 6:30 p.m., but if more happen to show I’m sure we’ll figure something out. I’m not opposed to

Impromptu Meetup for ROC Front-End Designers/Devs

I’m Florida-based, but my work with the FUEL team will lead me up to the ROC often, so I’m really interested in meeting local front-end designers/devs.

I’d also really like to buy Mike Alsup a beer. He’s a jQuery team member and the developer of the Cycle Plugin, which I have used in more than a handful of sites. It’s a great resource for quick slideshow implementation and it’s free. I noticed that he lives in Palmyra and found out that he has a policy of not turning down beer offers, so we’re gonna meet up at The Distillery Tuesday Night.

I’ll get things started with a few pitchers and some wings for anyone that would like to come along. Say, 6:30 til ???

Using Crazyegg to find UI errors

I really appreciated everyone’s points about the UI for my latest project FlMillion.com. So, as I evaluated them I also signed up for Crazyegg to get some anonymous user feedback. (I originally tried clickheat but gave up on getting it working after 2 days).

Anyways, I found a significant error UI error that you can see below:

I had originally intended to have these little chips representing the areas involved, but it seems that a good amount of my 200 visitor test feels that they should be clickable. (They are now) It still needs work, I should do some sort of rollover so that they entice clicking, but I needed it corrected immediately.

The good news is that I already feel that the Crazyegg purchase was a worthwhile spend. It was a breeze to sign-up, to get installed and provides great data.

How can this be better?

While we have some amazing stuff in the works at FUEL, none of it is ready for sharing yet. So, I thought I would ask for some constructive CRITICISM of my latest project, flmillion.com.

The site: FLMillion.com

Background:

This site is intended to promote and offer information about a large multi-location poker tournament in the state of Florida. It’s the first of its kind and will require players to be able to quickly find out information about how to play, how many players are in, how many are left and how much is in the prize pool.

Explaining the concept has turned out to be a little tricky, so I’m wondering if any of my fellow designer tweeps or poker tweeps want to offer some constructive criticism.

I want to make this better. Providing that things go well with the event, it will become bi-annual and I will move it to ExpressionEngine to be able to track information about prior events.

For now, the site is static and has no social media whatsoever. I’m planning on some “tweet this” and “share this on Facebook” links for each “Day One” event once I’m confident that the site is ready.

So, if you’re interested in throwing your ideas of what I could do better with anything on the site, please hook me up through my nifty Wufoo form.

I met Nick and Jim at the Front-End Design Conference this year and have bumped into them at Barcamp Tampa Bay and then LessConf. So, when they mentioned that they were putting together a show I was very eager to check it out.

I have to say that I am extremely impressed with the quality, especially for their first episode. While many shows are web guys trying to do video, they appear to be experienced video guys talking about web work. The transitions and cuts are very well done and add a a “finished” feel to the show.

If you’re a company that advertises through media, I’d suggest locking up some spots early. This show is going to catch fire. There are over 40 comments and it’s hours old….

Hanging With the Cool Kids

So, I’m officially hanging with the cool kids, aka Adelle Charles, Josh Smibert and Doug Neiner with a brand spanking new site design and this new tumblr.

I want to say thank you for everyones help in getting this up and running. Adelle for designing it, Doug for coding it, Tim for trying to make me pretty on the picture and Media Temple for helping me sort the subdomain stuff.
